The Tower of the Elephant - Title Page

  1. THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT: Title Page - A black ink and black color pencil on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears as the Title Plate in my art folio, "THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT," based on a story by Robert E. Howard, and published by Bortner and Kruse in 1977.

When I received the offer from Bortner and Kruse to do this Art Folio I had to decide whether to accept royalty payments based on sales figures, or to opt for a one-time full payment. At this particular time my car was old and dying, so I decided to take full payment now and use the money to buy a new car.

Actually, the one time payment was half payment in advance, and the other half on delivery of the artwork. It took me two weeks to do the artwork and mail it to the publishers, and a few weeks later I went to pick up my brand new car.

I'll never know if I would have made more money by selecting royalty payments, but time and circumstance dictated which payment plan I chose, and once I made the decision I didn't worry about it.
